The Nepal floods have left thousands of people missing after a devastating disaster struck the Nepal-Tibet border region on August 26, 2026. Among those unaccounted for have been tourists, pilgrims and foreign nationals, including people from the UK and US. Search and rescue operations have been continuing as authorities work to establish who remains missing.
Nepal Floods Leave UK and US Tourists Unaccounted For
British and American nationals have been among the foreign travellers affected by the disaster. Earlier reports identified dozens of US citizens and more than 30 British nationals as missing, although those figures have changed as some people have been contacted or located.
Many of the affected travellers had been visiting the region as part of religious journeys or organised tours. Some groups were travelling towards or returning from the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage when communication was lost near the Nepal-China border.
What Happened During the Nepal-Tibet Flood Disaster
The disaster was triggered by a major glacier and bedrock collapse in the Himalayas. A powerful surge of water, ice, rock and mud was sent through valleys and along the Trishuli River, causing widespread destruction near the border region.
Roads, bridges, buildings and communication infrastructure were severely damaged. As a result, contact with travellers in remote areas was lost, and the identities and locations of many missing people have been difficult to verify. Officials have also said that some people could potentially be safe but remain unreachable because communications have been disrupted.
Search Continues for Missing Tourists and Survivors
Search operations have been expanded across affected areas, with security forces, rescue workers and local authorities involved. Hospitals, evacuation centres, damaged settlements and isolated locations have been checked as information about missing people has been gathered.
Fresh hope has been provided by recent rescues. On September 4, two workers were rescued alive from a hydropower tunnel after being trapped for nine days. Their rescue has demonstrated that survivors can still be found in difficult conditions, although the search remains extremely challenging.
